Bulldogs Split Weekend Games

2019-11-12

The AA Munro Junior B Bulldogs started the second week in November with Head Coach Donnie Grant feeling pretty good about the way the team had been playing, but something about the Bulldogs last few games wasn't sitting well.  “If you look at the way we played the last three games, we came out very strong and carried the play for a lot of the 1st period, but once the second period hit, we seemed to get away from our systems and game plan”.  Coach Grant continued, “Every team in this league is good – the game is so fast that you have to be on your game every time you step on the ice, or you will find yourself on the losing side of the game sheet!”

On Friday November 8, the Dogs hosted the Pictou County Scotians, having bested the Scotians in their first two meetings this season.  The Dogs stormed out of the dressing room in the first, outshooting the Scotians 17-10, but could only manage a few posts for their efforts, as Scotians goaltender Sebastian Aucoin was sharp and thwarted a number of great Dogs chances.  The game was even at 0’s until Keegan Gauthier (2nd year, Halifax) notched a power play marker assisted by Sam Legere (1st year, Halifax) and Zach Forsythe (2nd year, Coldbrook).  That PP marker woke up the Scotians as they roared back and really began to take it to the Dogs.  The Scotians popped two goals in the second and two more early in the third to build a 4-1 lead that got narrowed to 4-2 by Ryan Bakker’s (1st year, Truro) goal from Sam Mattie (1st year, Rockland ON) with about 5 minutes to go in the second.  The Dogs owned the last five minutes of the game, but Aucoin was unflappable in the nets and the Scotians took the two points with a 4-2 final score.  Although he kept the Dogs in the game with some terrific saves in the third period, netminder Jared Green (3rd year, Antigonish) was tagged with the loss.

The next day, the Dogs made the trip to Brookfield for an afternoon affair against the Elks.  The Dogs were obviously not happy with Friday’s result, and proceeded to pepper the Brookfield net with shot after shot enroute to a 6-0 blanking of the Elks.  Captain Andrew Boyle (4th year, Antigonish) led the way with a goal and three assists, while Sam Mattie chipped in with a goal and two assists.  Ryan Kennedy (3rd year, Antigonish) and Fearghus MacDonald (2nd year, Antigonish) each added a goal and an assist; Zach Forsythe and Connor MacEachern (1st year Ottawa) rounded out the goal scoring with one each, while Keegan Gauthier, Sam Legere, Jack Nielsen (1st year, Calgary), and Matthew Melanson (1st year, Truro) each added single helpers.  Cody MacEachern (1st year, Ottawa) was solid in the Dogs cage to net his first shutout of the season.  “To say that the coaching staff wasn’t happy with the result on Friday is an understatement,” said Coach Grant. “A few things we addressed before the game on Saturday, and we thought the guys executed a lot better, but we have to bring that level of commitment to the ice each and every shift if we are to have success in this league,”  Coach Grant offered.

The Dogs next see action this weekend with a home game against the Strait Pirates on Sunday, November 17th, in what should be a very fast-paced and entertaining game for local hockey fans.  Puck drop at the Pound is 7:30 PM, so make sure to come out and support your AA Munro Junior B Bulldogs!
